In general, Bali was “discovered” in the 1920′s as a kind of Shangri-la and has been popular since then, it has gotten more and more tourists, and many more people go holidays to Bali.
There are Bali package holidays and direct flights there now, so it is a bit like Waihiki beach, when the rest of Hawaii has beautiful remote parts, they just go to that one beach. A lot of Bali is like that. There are lovely places in Bali too that still have nice old traditional life, villages with hand drawn carts and farmers who water their crops by hand. If you go anywhere for holidays to Bali outside the huge resorts like Kuta, Sanur etc, you will see some kind of paddy fields and nice green mountains.
Bali is really beautiful. That is one of the reasons of its popularity. You bet you will have no hesitation to decide to go holidays to Bali. Also it is a Hindu island in the middle of all the other Muslim islands. I really suggest staying in Ubud, in the hills. It is very pretty and real people live there, going to market, walking along the little roads, and there’s fresh fish/fruit markets every day. It’s an artist center, lots of Balinese and foreigners have always gone there to paint, sculpt etc. Lots of interesting well designed hotels too, very tranquil and refined. Loads of lovely cafes and very good restaurants. You can base there perhaps and go on day trips.

The north of Bali has a volcano called Mount Batur, you can climb it, takes half a day, there’s a temple up there dedicated to the goddess of the lake. It’s a very sacred mountain. inside the outer crater there is a lake and on the side of the lake there is a town called Penelokan with another temple, and along the lake are some open-air burial sites, which are very sacred ( obviously) to the Balinese that live there.
Celuk is a town famous for the silverware-jewellery and stuff. It is nice to go there and buy directly from the guys who make it. The batur temple festival is great- the one thing about Bali is that there is a festival every three days, they are always celebrating something, So try to catch some good ones in the temples. And my advice, stay away from Kuta and Sanur and all the places that are package holidays.
